Abstract The Matano fault in central Sulawesi is one of the major strike-slip faults that accommodate rapid left-lateral slip between Pacific and Australian plates. has a high seismic potential producing large (M w ≥7) earthquakes. However, was less studied, unlike Palu-Koro fault. This paper presents preliminary results our active investigation eastern which may help understanding neotectonics earthquake hazard Sulawesi. late Quaternary deformation evidenced by deformed young geomorphic surfaces. shows predominantly motion steeply dipping plane. portion form gap potentially host next surface-rupturing earthquake.
